How to Stay Patient During Toilet Training? – 9 Super Helpful Tips

Toilet Training is no joke, I’m writing this blog post after finishing training my daughter! It’s no Joke.

Especially the first 1-3 days are the worst.

But keeping cool is important. I understand that yelling and shouting can make things fiendishly difficult.

I worked on ways to keep my cool and stay patient with every accident.
It’s hard but doable.

I learned and followed some of these tips to stay calm with my daughter!

Patience During Potty Training

1- Learn Before Starting:

The very first thing that can make toilet training difficult is that people don’t study a lot. 

It is a common practice that everyone knows

 “Leave the baby without a diaper and take her to the target every now and then, and within a few days the baby will be trained.”


There are several methods of toilet training and you have to choose one that suits your baby’s age and other similar factors.

Not learning before starting the training will make you more overwhelmed and you are more likely to lose your temper because it will be harder for you to figure out the things.

2- Plan Before Starting:

Planning includes many things!
I prepared some meals, (asked my husband to buy more meals from the restaurant), I did laundry.

If you go grocery shopping, I recommend you complete it for at least one week.
Planning will make you less overwhelmed and you are more likely to keep your cool.

3- Keep reading the articles about toilet training

I learned that the more I read the articles based on toilet training, the more I felt motivated.

Ingesting more information kept me on track and I kept my sanity for longer.

4- Reward jar for going potty

I kept a reward jar for my daughter to keep her motivated and enjoy the process.
Didn’t I need motivation? I needed it a lot.

You can reward yourself with a few dollars and add them up in a jar so you could buy you something you wanted for so long.

It’s just an idea, you can reward yourself with anything that motivates you.

5- Keep things fun

Keep things fun for you and your baby. 

Get ideas on how to make the toilet training more fun!

When the baby will enjoy the process, she won’t give you so much tough time.

You will also enjoy the time (a little bit!)

6- Ask for help:

Never hesitate to ask for help. You can take help from your partner, parents or siblings, anyone with whom your child is attached can help.

When someone will be there to help you, your workload will reduce, you’ll be way less overwhelmed and a lot more patient. 

Remember, the person who is helping you should be emotionally attached with the child so the baby could feel comfortable.

7- Set Realistic expectations:

  • Understand the child
  • Expect tantrums
  • A lot of accidents may happen
  • Expect a lot of cleaning work
  • Expect a lot of involvement with the kid

Setting realistic expectations will help you stay patient. 

Understand that the child is used to wearing a diaper for years, for her whole life, she is very new to this “no diaper” thing. 

Understand the burden on the little brain and be soft and easy on her.

Expect a lot of accidents, at least in the beginning, my daughter had back to back 4-5 accidents before she picked up her body signals.

Even after several no missed attempts, the child still may have a few accidents.

Understand that this process will take a lot of time, even if you are following the bare bottom method, you’ll have to spend many hours occupied with cleaning and training the child.

Setting realistic expectations will help you stay patient.

8- Deep Breathing:

Deep breathing helps to reduce the level of stress. If you feel like yelling; take a few deep breaths. Inhale from the nose, hold the breath and exhale from the mouth. 

3-4 deep breaths should do.

9- Sip Chamomile tea:

Chamomile is known for its calming effects.
